Babcock says Oilers will give Tristan Jarry the opening-night start vs. Canucks at Rogers Place

Mike Babcock said Tristan Jarry will get the opening-night start as the Edmonton Oilers open the 2026-27 regular season Tuesday night against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Place.

The Story

The Edmonton Oilers will open the 2026-27 regular season on Tuesday night against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Place, with Mike Babcock saying Tristan Jarry will get the opening-night start.

Babcock made the decision public on Monday after Jarry appeared in two preseason games.

Babcock pointed to Jarry’s work over the summer, including improvements to his conditioning, and said he also worked closely with goaltending coach Peter Aubry.

Edmonton also enters the opener with a new system under Babcock, focused on playing fast and responsibly. In the preseason, the Oilers went 4-0-0 and outscored opponents 14-5.

Babcock said Jarry was solid in both preseason appearances and was better in the second outing when Edmonton was under pressure. Across two games against Winnipeg and Vancouver, Jarry stopped 40 of 42 shots over five periods.

The Canucks are set to provide an early measuring stick when regular-season play begins at 8:00 PM MT in Edmonton. Leon Draisaitl said the excitement of a new year has returned, while the team is still working on timing and details after preseason progress.
