Beniers Scores 55 Seconds into OT as Kraken Beat Flames 2–1

Matty Beniers scored 55 seconds into overtime to lift the Seattle Kraken to a 2–1 win over the Calgary Flames at Climate Pledge Arena on Wednesday.

The Story

The Calgary Flames jumped out to a 1–0 lead 12:45 into the first period when Yegor Sharangovich tipped Zach Whitecloud’s slap shot from the point past Seattle goalie Joey Daccord, slipping through his five-hole.

Berkly Catton appeared to tie the game on a breakaway at 14:47 of the first period, but the goal was overturned after video review confirmed he entered the offensive zone ahead of the puck and was offside.

Catton then evened the score 13:09 into the second period, finishing a rush by Mackie Samoskevich that carried him crossing the blue line; Catton snapped a shot from the right circle over Dustin Wolf’s glove.

Beniers ended the game in overtime, scoring 55 seconds into the extra period. Brandon Montour intercepted a pass in the defensive zone to spring Beniers on a breakaway, and Beniers won it with a low wrist shot from the slot past Wolf’s left pad.

“That was probably the longest breakaway I've ever had,” Beniers said. “There was a lot of ice. (Montour) made a great play to intercept that and then give it to me.”

Joey Daccord made 25 saves for Seattle, while Wolf stopped 27 shots for Calgary.

Berkly Catton extended his point streak to seven games for the Kraken, who entered with a 9–5–1 record and had dropped two of three, including a 6–2 loss at Calgary in their previous game on Friday.

For Calgary, the win kept the Flames alternating wins and losses over their past six games, after Sharangovich’s early strike.

Calgary forward Morgan Frost recorded his 200th NHL point with an assist on Sharangovich’s goal, and Catton’s seven-game streak is the longest of his NHL career.

Seattle coach Lane Lambert said the team needed time after a break to find its legs, adding that Daccord “played very well for us tonight, made huge saves when he had to.”
