The Vancouver Whitecaps have re-signed Thomas Müller to remain with the club at least through next June and the end of the 2027 MLS “sprint” season.
The Story
The Vancouver Whitecaps announced that Thomas Müller will be re-signed to stay with the club at least through next June and through the end of the 2027 MLS “sprint” season.
The “sprint” season is the shortened campaign designed to bridge the league from the full 2026 schedule, which ran from spring to winter, to a summer-to-spring calendar that will begin in the summer of 2027 and run through May 2028.
Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster said being able to tell staff the club’s greatest star is staying matters for keeping the group together, adding that “It’s really a special thing but it also drives everything in the club. It’s really brought us together.”
Schuster said Müller’s commitment to the project helps create stability for the rest of the roster, describing the message as “the glue for all the others,” and said, “There is no other choice but to fight. Thomas is here, no one is leaving.”
Schuster also acknowledged that there is “very much a chance” Müller will renew again to play in the 2027-28 campaign.
He said the terms were set in part around Müller’s desire to continue while he can still compete, stating, “We had this discussion on the first contract, he wanted to see how his year goes,” and “He wants to play as long as he can compete.”
The CEO said Müller’s immediate focus is on the upcoming season, with the next June option still “nine months away” and sufficient time for him to determine whether he can keep going.
Schuster said talks about the deal in recent weeks were not complicated, and added that while the club continues to work on broader planning, it is still navigating uncertainty around stadium discussions tied to the provincial election. He said those talks at B.C. Place remain on hold, and if the Conservatives win, it is currently unknown how they would view the Whitecaps’ interest in the stadium.
Schuster also said there is international investor interest in the team, clarifying it is “not qualified yet because the structure they had in mind isn’t what MLS is after,” and he does not know where it will go.
