Point Roberts Golf & Country Club adjusts after B.C. skips the clock change, creating a new one-hour gap

Point Roberts Golf & Country Club says B.C. did not change its clocks this week, leaving the club one hour behind its Canadian neighbours.

The Story

Point Roberts Golf & Country Club in Point Roberts, Washington, is dealing with a new time difference after British Columbia opted out of the usual clock change while Washington State rolled its clocks back.

Club general manager Joe Lee said that because 80 to 90 per cent of the club’s customers are Canadian, staff are taking extra steps to prevent golfers from arriving at the wrong time.

Lee said the club calls golfers to remind them it is running on Washington time, adding that a tee time booked for 7:30 in Point Roberts would be 8:30 in Canada.

He said the change has caused “a lot of complications,” especially for golfers who are adjusting to the new one-hour difference.

One golfer said the time gap was confusing at the border, explaining that they told officials their time was 9:40 while Canadian time was 10:40.

Lee, who lives in Canada and commutes to Point Roberts for work, said he also has to adjust his schedule and described leaving his home at 9:50 a.m. to make it to work by 9:30.

He added that when he picks up his children, he has to leave two hours early because “I lose an hour.”

Despite the complications, Lee said the time change can benefit golfers because it means they tend to arrive early, giving them more time to warm up at the driving range.
