Gunman kills 5, injures more than a dozen in Krakow market-square shooting, police say

Police in Krakow, Poland say a gunman opened fire in the Main Square on Saturday, killing five people and injuring more than a dozen others.

The Story

Police in Krakow say five people were killed and more than a dozen were injured after a gunman opened fire Saturday afternoon in a busy market square in the city’s Main Square, a major tourist destination in the centre of Krakow.

Krakow police say the perpetrator, a Polish citizen, aimed at random people as he drove into the Main Square, and police officers were among the wounded.

Police say the gunman was shot and wounded during a gunfight with officers a short distance from the initial violence. Krakow police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło said the perpetrator was wearing military-style fatigues and used a military-type long gun in the attack.

Cisło said police found other weapons and ammunition in the gunman’s car. She added that the gunman acted alone and that the public is safe.

The Krakow municipal transport company said a tram driver reported around 3 p.m. that the tram had been shot at from a man in a moving car as it passed nearby the Main Square; the driver’s cabin window was shattered.

Cisło said a Polish Medical Air Rescue helicopter landed in the square, and images from the scene showed police officers and ambulances covering the area.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said police are investigating the attack, and President Karol Nawrocki said his thoughts were with the victims, the wounded and their families. The U.S. ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, wrote on X that America stands with Poland at what he called a dark hour.
