Richmond school trustee candidate John Zhang says basics, safe schools and responsible spending are priorities

John Zhang is running as an independent for Richmond school trustee and said his priorities include strong academics, safe and inclusive schools, and responsible spending.

The Story

Richmond school trustee candidate John Zhang is running as an independent in the upcoming civic election, with his home neighbourhood listed as Steveston.

In candidate information provided for voters, Zhang described his background as an entrepreneur and educator. He said his hobbies include Chinese calligraphy, seal carving, and pickleball.

Zhang said he is running because “every child deserves a strong start — in the classroom and in life.” He said he immigrated to Canada in 1996 and founded a foreign language school in 1998. He also said he has worked in education for more than 25 years and has led large teams and managed organizations for over 20 years.

Zhang said he wants strong academics, safe and welcoming classrooms, and “honest stewardship of public funds.” He added that, as a trustee, he would focus on student achievement, safe and inclusive schools, responsible spending, stronger communication with parents, and preparing students for a rapidly changing world.

In response to a yes/no questionnaire, Zhang said schools should teach more basics such as reading and math, and he said the curriculum should focus more on trades training. He also said there is enough focus on social issues in the curriculum, but he said school districts should not be allowed to set school tax rates.

Zhang said students should be taught drug awareness in high school and supported making elementary track meets more inclusive. He also said students should have more outdoor education opportunities.

On technology in schools, Zhang said artificial intelligence should not be banned, arguing that AI is already part of the world students will work in and that students should learn to use it “responsibly, critically, and creatively,” with “clear district guidelines” developed with teachers. He said cellphones should be banned in Richmond schools.

Zhang said teachers are not adequately paid. He also said there should be more educational support workers in schools.

Finally, Zhang said he supports SOGI policies in Richmond schools, saying they help ensure students feel safe and respected. He said he supports the continued work of the district’s SOGI advisory committee and policies that ensure students “feel safe, respected, and able to focus on learning.”
