Some federal government websites still unavailable after security updates for PHP vulnerabilities

The office of Canada’s federal chief information officer says security updates are being applied and some government sites may still be temporarily unavailable.

The Story

Some federal government websites were still out of commission on Oct. 22, as Ottawa continued urgent security updates tied to vulnerabilities in PHP, according to the office of the federal government’s chief information officer.

The office said work began after the AI-assisted discovery of the PHP vulnerabilities, a programming language described in the report as vital to 70 per cent of websites globally.

Governments and corporations worked through the night applying updates, and the office said some government websites may be temporarily unavailable or experience service disruptions while measures are implemented.

The office said it is working to restore access as quickly and securely as possible, and added there is no indication that any federal systems have been compromised.

The office said artificial intelligence agents helped uncover the vulnerabilities, and reported that OpenAI has said it led a coalition of researchers, security providers and others addressing PHP vulnerabilities over the past two months.
