Palmieri nets two goals as Islanders beat Canucks 3–2 at UBS Arena

Kyle Palmieri scored twice as the New York Islanders defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3–2 at UBS Arena on Tuesday.

The Story

Kyle Palmieri gave the Islanders a 1–0 lead at 14:57 of the first period, deflecting Matthew Kessel’s shot from the right point over Leevi Merilainen’s blocker.

Just 53 seconds later, Matias Maccelli made it 2–0 by beating Merilainen high to the blocker side from the left circle off a feed from Matthew Schaefer.

The Canucks got one back at 7:52 of the second period when Max Sasson took advantage of a loose puck in the left circle and beat Ilya Sorokin under his glove.

Brock Boeser tied the game 2–2 on a power play at 18:55, scoring blocker side with a one-timer from the top edge of the right circle off a pass from Elias Pettersson.

Sorokin, who finished with 23 saves for New York, preserved the tie in the third period as Vancouver worked the power play, including a pair of stops at 1:53 and 2:05.

Palmieri restored the Islanders’ lead at 5:38 of the third period, firing a wrist shot from the slot that beat Merilainen glove side through a screen to make it 3–2.

The Islanders won 3–2 to improve to a 3–3–0 record, while the Canucks dropped to 2–6–0 and extended a five-game losing streak; Merilainen made 35 saves.
