Gastown’s Water Street and surrounding blocks were transformed for a commercial shoot, temporarily bringing snow and holiday decor to the oldest part of Vancouver.

Gastown was turned into a winter-themed film set on Sunday night, as crews used parts of the historic neighbourhood to stage a holiday look for a commercial shoot. Passersby, residents and people working in the area paused to watch as winter-style decorations appeared along the street scene.
The filming activity centred on Water Street, with shots also conducted on nearby Abbott Street. Onlookers gathered along the sidewalks as trees in the area were wrapped with lights and oversized Christmas wreaths were visible during breaks between takes.
Several people stopped to take photos, including a couple who were walking near the Lamplighter Public House. The scene featured snow placed along the sidewalks, creating a seasonal effect in what the report described as one of the last days of summer.
A crew member said the production was for a commercial. When asked whether it was tied to a vehicle advertisement, the crew member responded that a vehicle commercial would be a “pretty good guess.”
The main attraction during the shoot was a Cadillac Optiq. According to the account, the vehicle was filmed multiple times driving up and down Water Street and Abbott Street, with the street set used repeatedly to capture different angles and takes.
Between filming runs, onlookers snapped selfies and photos, particularly focused on the wreaths and the lights around the trees. The combination of early snow effects and decorated trees drew attention from visitors and local workers in the neighbourhood.
The weekend shoot also served as an early seasonal reminder for Vancouver’s holiday calendar. Vancouver’s largest and longest-running Christmas Market has announced its return, transforming Jack Poole Plaza into a German-style holiday event from Monday, Nov. 16 to Thursday, Dec. 24.
Organizers say the market will feature dozens of food and drink vendors, as well as artisans and makers at more than 90 wooden huts. With the Gastown production already bringing an autumn-to-winter visual shift to downtown streets, the upcoming Jack Poole Plaza event is set to expand that holiday atmosphere into a long-running public installation.
The filming set highlighted how Gastown’s streets and heritage streetscape can be adapted quickly for seasonal storytelling, drawing both people who live nearby and tourists moving through the area. For practical purposes, the activities also show how filming can temporarily affect normal pedestrian routines in popular downtown blocks such as Water Street and Abbott Street during peak visitor periods.
