The recall covers 44,303 vehicles and involves multiple Volkswagen and Audi models, including the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, and certain model years of the 2019 to 2021 Audi Q3.
According to the recall notice, the concern involves one of the bolts that attaches the steering rack to the subframe on certain vehicles.
The notice states that, if the bolt corrodes and breaks, the steering rack housing could break.
Transport Canada says that a break of the steering rack housing could result in a loss of steering control.
The potential steering failure is described as a crash risk, because drivers may not be able to maintain steering as intended.
For affected vehicles, Transport Canada says owners will be notified by mail.
The company will advise owners to take their vehicle to a dealership, where the right steering rack mounting bolt will be replaced.
