Edmonton’s Zach Hyman was sent to the infirmary with an upper-body injury as Devon Levi prepares to make his first start ahead of the Oilers’ visit to Vancouver.
The Story
Edmonton Oilers head coach Mike Babcock said Zach Hyman was added to the infirmary with an upper-body injury, an ailment he suffered during the final pre-season game against the Calgary Flames.
Hyman becomes the latest in a growing group of Oilers unavailable for Thursday night’s rematch against the Vancouver Canucks, with Edmonton already dealing with injuries that had included top-nine forwards Matt Savoie, Jason Dickinson and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, along with Mattias Janmark and Alec Regula, plus goaltender Freddie Andersen.
Babcock said the injury also presents an opportunity for depth players to earn bigger roles, adding that teams try “everybody” early in the season as they work to find roles.
He also pointed to Levi as a chance for the backup goaltender to play, saying Levi had been a confident, quality option throughout camp and appears to want to take the opportunity.
Ahead of Thursday’s game, the Oilers shuffled their roster by placing Nugent-Hopkins on injured reserve and moving Savoie and Regula to long-term injured reserve. PuckPedia, citing an update posted on X, reported the Oilers had $761,666 in cap space.
After facing Vancouver Thursday night, Edmonton returns home to host the Seattle Kraken, before beginning a three-game road trip next Wednesday against the Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings.
