O Canada singer appeared to forget lyrics before Canada–Peru friendly, with crowd helping save it

A singer appeared to stumble through the French version of ‘O Canada’ before Canada’s men’s national soccer friendly against Peru at Saputo Stadium in Montreal, and the crowd sang along to help finish it.

The Story

A woman at Saputo Stadium in Montreal appeared to forget the lyrics to ‘O Canada’ before a friendly featuring Canada’s men’s national soccer team against Peru on the weekend of Oct. 3, 2026.

The singer appeared to start messing up the tune by the third line of the French version, then stopped midway through the fourth line and restarted. The second attempt went worse, according to the video shared online.

A quick-thinking person at the stadium then played a recorded version of the anthem. A sold-out crowd of 19,619 sang along, helping to finish the performance.

The moment was later picked up internationally, and an account incorrectly identified the woman as singer Alessia Cara. Cara posted a clarification on social media, saying “Hey… wasn’t me,” and added, “Also, leave that poor girl alone.”
