Canucks drop sixth straight, blow late lead in 3-2 OT loss to Florida

The Vancouver Canucks lost 3-2 in overtime to the Florida Panthers on Thursday after surrendering the winner late.

The Story

The Vancouver Canucks suffered their sixth straight loss on Thursday, falling 3-2 to the Florida Panthers in overtime after blowing a two-goal lead in the dying seconds.

Brady Tkachuk scored all the damage for Florida, including the overtime winner. The game featured a natural hat trick by Tkachuk, which spoiled a Canucks lead that stood until the final moments.

Vancouver still earned a loser point despite the loss. The defeat also left the Canucks with one remaining game on their road trip, a Saturday matinee against Tampa.

Tkachuk’s performance included history-making feats: the source reports he was the first player since 1986 to score natural hat tricks in back-to-back games, following a 7-3 win over Columbus on Tuesday. It also says the last Vancouver connection to consecutive natural hat tricks belonged to forward Petri Skriko, who accomplished the feat between Nov. 18 and Nov. 21, 1986.

The story also notes the Canucks’ focus on their blue-line, including Zeev Buium. In overtime, Buium was on the ice for nearly two minutes before Tkachuk beat him by leaning outside as he went inside with the puck. The source says Buium finished with 19:24 of ice time, about three minutes more than he logged during a season-low performance in a prior loss to the Islanders.

Ahead of the game, Vancouver made a trade sending Aatu Raty to Toronto in exchange for two prospects. The source says the return was Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr, and describes Quillan as 24 and mostly AHL-bound, while Buhr is described as an ECHL player.
