Driver may have had medical emergency before pickup hit group at Tsawwassen Mills, killing 2 elders

Police in Delta say the driver of a pickup may have experienced a medical emergency before the vehicle struck four people at Tsawwassen Mills on Sept. 30.

The Story

Community members of the Tsawwassen First Nation gathered outside Tsawwassen Mills shopping centre south of Vancouver after a pickup hit four people near one of the mall’s entrances Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026.

Two elders were killed and two other people were injured, according to police in Delta, B.C.

Police said the suspected cause may have been a medical emergency involving the driver.

Prime Minister Mark Carney posted condolences on social media to those who lost loved ones or were injured, saying the accident happened on a day already heavy with grief.

The crash occurred while the community was taking part in a walk to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Provincial Health Services Authority said it sent 12 ground ambulances and two helicopters to respond.

Police spent much of the day with witnesses and nation members in a restaurant at the scene, where the pickup came to rest against a brick wall.
