Ottawa launches telecom roadmap aimed at boosting competition and consumer choice

The federal government says it is rolling out a telecom roadmap to increase competition and consumer choice in internet and mobile services.

The Story

The federal government says it is launching a roadmap designed to boost competition and choice in Canada’s telecommunications sector.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced the plan late Wednesday, saying it is intended to break down regional barriers and promote cross-Canada competition in the internet and mobile services market.

Ottawa said it will take action to give consumers more choices and make it easier for providers to access existing networks or expand the infrastructure they own. The government also said it wants consumers to benefit from more affordable plans, noting that cellular plan prices are down 49 per cent compared with 2019.

The government said it will “spotlight” competitive offers on the market and help companies deploy the latest fibre-optic networks, test new technologies, and strengthen access to connectivity in northern, rural and Indigenous communities.

Ottawa said it plans to monitor progress through indicators including prices, switching behaviour, network speeds, coverage and consumer complaints.
