The Story

Vancouver police say a man with outstanding warrants was arrested last night after an alleged assault of two tourists near Abbott and West Cordova streets in Gastown.

Police said two Vancouver Police Department officers were patrolling around 11 p.m. when they saw an altercation between the suspect and two people. Officers moved in and handcuffed the suspect.

The victims are from Calgary, and police said they were walking back from the Bruno Mars concert when the incident occurred. Police allege the male victim was punched in the arm with what officers believe was glass, and that the female victim was forced into a light pole during the struggle.

Police said the male victim had a cut to his left forearm, and BC Emergency Health Services treated him at the scene.

Police identified the accused as Derek Dale Driscoll, 34. He has been charged with assault, assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.

Police said Driscoll was also wanted on two outstanding warrants, including one related to an alleged breach of probation order and one for failing to attend court. He is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
