Canucks place Aatu Räty on waivers; he clears, then Maple Leafs acquire him

Aatu Räty was placed on waivers by the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday, passed through unclaimed, and was then traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Story

Aatu Räty’s time with the Vancouver Canucks appeared to end quickly after the team placed him on waivers on Wednesday. Räty passed through waivers unclaimed, meaning no other NHL club took him for free.

The Canucks had given Räty a limited look in the preseason, and he was then a healthy scratch in four of the team’s first eight games of the season.

The waiver move came as Vancouver’s coach, Manny Malhotra, used Paul Cotter and Drew O’Connor at centre ahead of Räty.

Moments after Räty cleared waivers, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded for him. The Maple Leafs, in return, gave up minor league assets Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr.
