TSX gains ground Friday after volatile week as investors weigh U.S. midterm impact

On Friday, the S&P/TSX composite index rose 183.82 points to close at 35,789.09 after earlier market volatility.

The Story

Canada’s main stock index finished higher Friday following volatile trading during the week as investors assessed the impact of recent U.S. midterm elections.

After the U.S. midterms, Canadian and U.S. equity markets rose sharply on Wednesday, with markets initially encouraged that investors could “move past it,” according to Sadiq Adatia, chief investment officer of BMO Global Asset Management.

Markets then faced an AI-related sell-off on Thursday, but trading improved on Friday as the TSX rebounded.

On Friday, the S&P/TSX composite index closed up 183.82 points at 35,789.09.

In the United States, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 237.33 points at 51,285.73, the S&P 500 rose 23.13 points to 7,376.86, and the Nasdaq composite rose 264.43 points to 24,579.42.

The Canadian dollar traded at 70.86 cents US, compared with 71.48 cents US on Thursday, while the December crude oil contract rose 31 cents US to US$90.83 per barrel.

The December gold contract was down US$38.60 at US$4,074.90 an ounce.
