Crews will replace expansion joints on the Georgia Viaduct deck and ramps, closing the vehicle exit ramp to Main Street until spring 2027.
The Story
The City of Vancouver is preparing repair work on the Georgia Viaduct that will reduce traffic flow and extend into next year, with a key ramp closure beginning this fall.
Starting October 2, 2026, the vehicle exit ramp from the Georgia Viaduct to Main Street will be closed for approximately three months. Traffic impacts will continue until spring 2027.
The work includes replacing expansion joins on the Georgia Viaduct deck and ramps, and the Georgia Viaduct sidewalk is anticipated to be closed for an extended period during construction. Pedestrians are directed to use the adjacent Dunsmuir Viaduct sidewalk.
Drivers can expect reduced lanes and potential delays on the Georgia Viaduct. Short-term lane closures may also occur on Pacific Boulevard below the viaduct at times to support the repairs.
For cyclists, the bike lane on the Dunsmuir Viaduct will not be impacted, and the Dunsmuir Viaduct will remain open to westbound vehicle traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists headed in both directions.
Work hours are scheduled for Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours as needed. The City says drivers and other road users should follow posted signage.
The City also noted that while the viaducts are planned to be replaced with an at-grade street network as part of the Northeast False Creek Plan, the timeline for removal remains uncertain and ongoing maintenance and repairs will be required to keep the existing infrastructure safe and reliable.
