Canucks and Rangers meet as three Petterssons share the ice in rare NHL matchup

The Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers face off Sunday night with Elias Pettersson and another Elias Pettersson on Vancouver, and Marcus Pettersson on New York.

The Story

Vancouver’s lineup includes two players with the last name Pettersson—both named Elias Pettersson—while the New York Rangers roster Marcus Pettersson. The teams meet Sunday night.

Despite sharing the same surname, the three NHL players are not related.

For Vancouver’s two Elias Petterssons, the team’s jersey presentation differs: the veteran forward is listed simply as “Pettersson,” while the younger Elias Pettersson is shown as “E. Pettersson.”

The Rangers acquired left-shot defenceman Marcus Pettersson from the Canucks on July 1, 2026.

As part of that trade, New York received a conditional first-round pick for 2030 that becomes a 2031 first-rounder if it lands in the top 10 in 2030.

The Canucks had Marcus Pettersson under contract for five more years at the time of the deal.
