Filip Hronek says he wants to stay with the Vancouver Canucks and help through what is expected to be a lengthy rebuild.
The Story
Filip Hronek says he does not plan to leave the Vancouver Canucks as the team enters what is expected to be a lengthy rebuild.
Speaking at the Jake Milford Canucks Charity Invitational Golf Tournament in Surrey, the 28-year-old defenceman said he is not looking to run from the uncertainty that comes with a rebuilding team. Asked about staying through what he described as the first clear-cut year of that process, Hronek said, “I don’t want to run away.”
Hronek is set to be one of the older players on Vancouver’s roster this season. He said the organization can still build something meaningful, adding, “I think we can build something special.”
The Canucks overhauled their leadership this summer, moving on from general manager Patrik Allvin and president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford and replacing them with co-presidents Henrik and Daniel Sedin and new general manager Ryan Johnson.
Hronek is under contract through the end of the 2031-32 season with an average annual value of $7.25 million, tying his immediate future firmly to Vancouver.
He is coming off a season in which he had eight goals and 49 points in 82 games.
Vancouver opens its pre-season Sept. 19 on the road against the Seattle Kraken, then visits the Edmonton Oilers on Sept. 29. The regular season is scheduled for 84 games.
