Doerkson keeps option open for a shortened fall sitting after B.C. election win

Premier-designate Lorne Doerkson said he will not rule out recalling the B.C. legislature for a shortened fall sitting after the Oct. 24 election.

The Story

B.C.'s newly elected Conservative government will not take its seats in the legislature until at least mid-November, but premier-designate Lorne Doerkson said he is keeping the option open to recall the legislature later in the fall.

Doerkson made the comments to reporters on Sunday, one day after winning the Oct. 24 B.C. election.

The Conservatives were elected with about two-thirds of the province’s 93 legislative seats, giving the party its first majority government in nearly a century.

Doerkson has outlined early priorities including an independent review of provincial finances and an expert commission aimed at keeping hospital emergency rooms open and reducing wait times.

A statement from the office of the clerk of the legislative assembly said oath ceremonies cannot take place until the election results are certified and provided by the chief electoral officer, which is expected Nov. 18.
