The Story
The Portland Trail Blazers kicked off their new NBA season Wednesday night with a resounding 41-point win over the Phoenix Suns at the Moda Center.
The game marked the return of Damian Lillard to Portland after he missed regular-season action following an Achilles injury he suffered in April 2025 while playing for the Milwaukee Bucks. In the season opener, Lillard scored 25 points, including six 3-pointers, in 24 minutes.
Ja Morant, whom Portland acquired during the summer from the Memphis Grizzlies, added 14 points and eight assists.
Alongside the on-court result, attention is also on the Blazers’ offseason and leadership. Micah Nori is the team’s new head coach.
Portland also faces a December deadline tied to negotiations between city officials and team management led by owner Tom Dundon for a new lease agreement for the Moda Center. The proposal involves roughly $600 million in public funds committed to renovate the aging arena, subject to certain conditions.
