Health Canada authorizes Moderna mRNA flu vaccine and flu-COVID combo for adults 50+

Health Canada has authorized Moderna’s mRNA flu vaccine and its mRNA combination flu-and-COVID vaccine for adults 50 and older.

The Story

Health Canada has authorized Moderna’s influenza mRNA vaccine, as well as a combination mRNA vaccine for flu and COVID-19.

The authorization applies to adults 50 years of age and older for both vaccines.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommends that everyone six months of age and older get this year’s non-mRNA flu shot, and it notes that a higher-dose flu vaccine is recommended for adults aged 65 and older.

The committee also strongly advises COVID-19 vaccination for people 65 and older and for residents of long-term care, retirement homes or assisted living.

Moderna said in a statement that Health Canada informed the company its flu vaccine, called mFLUSIVA, and its combination flu-and-COVID shot, called mCOFLU, had been approved.

According to the company, its mRNA flu vaccine was approved in the United States in August and its combination vaccine was approved in Europe last April, and Moderna said Canada is the first country to authorize both vaccines. Moderna also said it will not be able to reach pharmacies in time for this respiratory virus season.
