Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada welcomes “any moves” to restore free trade with the United States following the U.S. midterms.
The Story
Prime Minister Mark Carney says the federal government welcomes “any moves” aimed at restoring free trade between Canada and the United States after the U.S. midterm elections delivered Democrats control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
In the days after the election, several U.S. party officials have indicated repealing tariffs on Canadian products is a priority, according to Carney.
Carney said he has not spoken with Democrats about introducing legislation to end the tariffs, adding that a free-trade agreement is in the interests of both Canadians and Americans.
Speaking to reporters Friday, Carney said his government will continue working with Washington to reach a deal that serves Canada.
Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, who has visited Washington to try to move forward Canada–U.S. trade negotiations, said Ottawa still needs to find ways to work with U.S. President Donald Trump and that the trade war is a “massive” distraction from domestic issues.
