“Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney” won the $25,000 WIFF Prize in Canadian Film at the Windsor International Film Festival.

The Story

A satirical documentary titled “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney” won the $25,000 WIFF Prize in Canadian Film at the Windsor International Film Festival.

The film is directed by Winnipeg-born filmmaker Matthew Rankin and was named as the festival’s top Canadian feature winner by the WIFF jury.

WIFF described the work as a highly stylized, technicolor exploration of political celebrity that splices archival footage of Mulroney before his time in 24 Sussex Drive, alongside multimedia collage elements.

The documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was an audience favourite in the Midnight Madness program.

In September, Rankin said, “It's not exactly a biopic of the man. It's really about the construction of his image.”

The WIFF jury praised “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney” for its “uniquely Canadian voice, and intelligence and humour,” and also acknowledged the contribution of archive producer Marika Lapointe, who “sifted through over 80,000 pieces of archival material.”

The winning film beat other Canadian works including “Nina Roza,” which follows a Bulgarian-Canadian art consultant returning to his homeland to investigate a supposed child prodigy, and “Haunted,” about a teenager who discovers her new countryside home is haunted by a 19th-century woman.
