The match in Sandy, Utah saw Vancouver control the early momentum. Brian White scored from point-blank range to make it 1-0 in the ninth minute, giving the Whitecaps a fast advantage that they carried throughout the night.
In the late first half, Vancouver doubled its lead. Yadaly Diaby, acquired on Sept. 1, delivered a gentle pass to Thomas Müller, who converted to make it 2-0 in the 29th minute. The assist was Diaby’s contribution in what was Müller’s first goal contribution in MLS.
Diaby’s impact continued after the interval. He intercepted a pass in the attacking third, raced to the edge of the penalty box, and fired a rising shot into the net to cap the scoring in the 63rd minute and secure the 3-0 margin.
Vancouver’s finishing was paired with a steady defensive display. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka recorded three saves for the Whitecaps, who have 11 shutouts this season. The clean sheet helped maintain Vancouver’s strong overall position, with the club holding a 15-6-4 record heading into the weekend and leading the Western Conference with 49 points.
Real Salt Lake, listed at 8-12-5 after the loss, was unable to break through despite goalkeeper Rafael Cabral making three saves. The defeat further underscored the club’s current form, with RSL having recorded eight losses since their last win.
The winless skid stretches back to the last time Real Salt Lake found a victory: a 2-1 home win over Colorado on May 16. Since that point, the team has struggled to turn games into results, and the Saturday loss marked yet another step in the extended run without a win.
For Vancouver, the victory continued a strong season profile that includes not only the points lead in the West but also frequent defensive success reflected in its shutouts. With the team generating goals from multiple players—White, Müller and Diaby—Vancouver’s attacking depth also stood out across the scoring sequence.
