Portland used a 21-0 start, a 40-16 rebounding edge and three steals each from Ja Morant (one game-high stat) to beat the Phoenix Suns with Damian Lillard scoring 25 points in his return to Moda Center.
The Story
The Portland Trail Blazers’ defence set the tone as they opened with a 21-0 run and built their way to a first-quarter lead that had them up by 31, before taking control further as the game went on.
The team’s margin peaked at as many as 52 points, with Portland maintaining dominance throughout the contest and finishing with its largest lead consistent with the early cushion established in the first quarter.
Portland’s rebounding was a central factor, with the Blazers collecting 40 defensive rebounds and 16 offensive rebounds. Donovan Clingan’s rebounding was highlighted, and Robert Williams III was cited as leading the way with 10 rebounds alongside Avdija, who also finished with 10.
The Blazers also created disruption with their hands on defence, finishing with 12 team steals. Ja Morant recorded three steals after swiping at Suns guards throughout the game, while Avdija and Holiday added two steals apiece. Portland scored 24 points off turnovers.
Damian Lillard’s return to Moda Center provided another boost for Portland, as he led the team with 25 points and knocked down six three-pointers. In the postgame comments, Morant said, “Before we even stepped on the floor, Dame reminded me of what everyone been saying,” adding, “Just know we handled business; we ain’t gonna speak on it.”
