Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams praised the Seattle Seahawks’ defence as the best in the NFL ahead of a Nov. 2 matchup at Lumen Field.
The Story
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams called the Seattle Seahawks defence the best unit in the NFL during a Wednesday, Oct. 28 press conference, setting the stage for a Monday night showdown.
Williams said Seattle’s defence is “obviously … the best defense in football right now for stats-wise, players, and scheme,” adding, “It’s going to be fun for us. It’s going to be a challenge for us. And we accept that challenge.”
He pointed to Seattle’s tendency to prevent big plays, saying, “They don’t allow deep plays. So you got to be as patient as possible,” and that the need for patience is “hard” for the offence “the whole game trying to be patient, patient, patient.”
Williams also highlighted the importance of protecting the football and limiting turnovers, noting that Seattle “do[es] a good job with punching the ball out and interceptions.” He further praised Seattle’s effort in getting to the ball, saying, “They rally to the ball. They got players, they got the scheme, like I said.”
The Seahawks head into the matchup after holding Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs to three points in a 20-3 victory at Lumen Field three days earlier.
Through seven games, Seattle leads the NFL in total defence, allowing 233.9 yards per game, ranks first against the pass with 144.4 yards allowed per game, and sits fourth in scoring defence at 17.9 points allowed per contest. The team has also recorded eight interceptions through seven games, tied for second in the league entering Week 8, with Julian Love and Nehemiah Pritchett each credited with two, and Ernest Jones, Josh Jobe, Ty Okada and Drake Thomas each with one.
For the Bears, Monday’s game matches Seattle’s defensive production against an offence that has been among the league’s best. Chicago enters with a 5-2 record, ranking third in total offence at 390.7 yards per game and eighth in scoring at 25.7 points per game.
Williams has been coming off a three-game absence and has produced at a high level in his most recent outings, throwing for 305 yards in the Bears’ 31-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 18 and then 308 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-24 win over the New England Patriots on Oct. 22.
Despite the Bears’ recent surge, Williams said the team will need to execute fundamentals and avoid errors against Seattle, stating, “We got to go out there. We got to execute. We got to do our part,” and adding, “That’s focused on the details, our fundamentals.”
The Seahawks and Bears will meet on Monday, Nov. 2, at Lumen Field.
