The Story
Ottawa Senators forward Hayden Hodgson was assessed a game misconduct and a major penalty after boarding Los Angeles Kings defenceman Brandt Clarke during Thursday night’s game.
The play came when Hodgson took a run at Clarke and charged into him at 21 mph, according to the game broadcast. Clarke was just below the goal line when he was driven into the boards, leading to a brief scrum.
Following the hit, the Kings’ Erik Haula received a two-minute penalty for roughing Hodgson. Clarke was ruled out for the rest of the game with what Los Angeles described as an upper-body injury.
The collision occurred with 8:45 left in the second period. It followed a stretch in which the Kings scored three goals in 4:03 to take a 4-1 lead and chase Senators goalie Jonas Johansson.
Earlier scoring by Los Angeles included power-play goals from Haula and Artemi Panarin, as Ottawa committed six penalties in the first two periods. The Kings used the man advantage to extend their lead to 5-1 heading into the third.
Hodgson has played only 24 NHL games over five seasons, but including Thursday he has accumulated 51 minutes in penalties.
