The Story
Kyle Palmieri scored twice and the New York Islanders edged the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Tuesday night, earning their third win of the season at UBS Arena.
Matias Maccelli scored New York’s first goal and also set up the go-ahead strike. Maccelli beat Leevi Merilainen late in the first period to make it 2-0 after Palmieri opened the scoring 53 seconds earlier.
Vancouver pulled within one when Brock Boeser, scoring on the power play, tied the game at 2-all with 1:05 left in the second period. In the third period, Maccelli assisted on Palmieri’s goal at 5:38, breaking a 2-2 tie.
Sorokin finished with 23 saves for the Islanders, who have alternated losses and wins over their first six games, with all three of their victories coming at UBS Arena.
The loss extended Vancouver’s skid to five straight since opening the season 2-1. Merilainen stopped 35 shots for the Canucks.
