The 5th annual Big Pirate Run drew runners and walkers to Garry Point Park and the West Dyke, raising support for the Richmond Food Bank.
The Story
Waves of participants dressed as pirates took over Richmond’s West Dyke and Garry Point Park this past weekend for the fifth annual Big Pirate Run, a high-energy event that blends themed fun with multiple race distances.
The main event featured runs and walks offering distances of 5 km, 10 km, 15 km and a 21.1 km route, with a separate Little Pirate Run/Walk described as a 1–3 km option around Garry Point Park.
Event organizers said families were welcome, including strollers and leashed dogs, with a specific start arrangement that had participants begin in the last wave “for the safety of everyone.” Homemade pirate costumes were common, adding to the colourful scene along the waterfront path.
The Big Pirate Run partnered with the Richmond Food Bank for the second year, linking the event to the organization’s ongoing work to provide healthy food to more than 2,200 people in need each week.
The event also highlighted its focus on coordination and participation, with organizers emphasizing a structured format across both the longer-distance routes and the shorter family-friendly course.
