Ramírez scores in both halves to stun Western leaders as Austin edges Whitecaps 2-1

Christian Ramírez scored once in each half as Austin FC beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 on Sunday.

The Story

Austin FC’s 2-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday hinged on efficiency and timing, with Christian Ramírez scoring once in each half to give the Texas club a comeback-free victory in Vancouver.

Vancouver entered the match as the Western Conference leader with 46 points and a 14-6-4 record. Austin was sitting at 7-10-8 heading into the game, but the win left it within one point of the playoff line.

Ramírez opened the scoring in the 28th minute, converting a right-footed shot into the bottom of the net for a 1-0 Austin lead.

Vancouver tied the game in the 49th minute when Brian White scored his 15th goal of the season. The sequence was described as White beating his defender to the ball, driving into Austin territory, and sending a low, rolling attempt past Brad Stuver.

Austin regained the lead in the second half. Ramírez made it 2-1 in the 60th minute with a shot into the top of the net, sparing the visitors any late comeback from Vancouver.

Austin defender Guilherme Biro was sent off in the 90th minute after receiving his second yellow card.

The Whitecaps played without midfielder Thomas Müller due to a thigh injury. Müller was injured in a 3-0 win over the LA Galaxy on Wednesday, the team said.

The matchup was mentioned alongside other MLS results with conference implications, including New England’s Revolution beating Chicago’s Fire 2-1 to move into sole possession of third place in the Eastern Conference with 43 points, while Nashville led the East with 11 more points than New England. The Chicago–Inter Miami game drew a record crowd of 63,094, after the Fire had drawn 1-1 with Inter Miami CF.
