Marc Gatcomb’s go-ahead goal lifts Golden Knights to 3-2 win over Canucks

Marc Gatcomb scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Sunday night.

The Story

The Vancouver Canucks fell 3-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday night, despite a bounce-back start from Kevin Lankinen.

Lankinen made 25 saves after allowing eight goals on 20 shots in the Canucks’ 9-7 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, and the Canucks also got goals from Paul Cotter and Jonathan Lekkerimaki. Cotter opened the scoring with a power-play goal late in the first period, extending his season-opening point streak to four games with four goals and two assists.

For Vegas, Mitch Marner scored his first goal of the season and Victor Olofsson added a power-play score. Adin Hill stopped 17 of the 19 shots he faced, including a key save midway through the third as he slid out of his crease to deny Liam Ohgren on a short-handed breakaway.

Vegas took a 2-1 lead at 14:30 of the second period on a power-play goal. After Hill stopped a shot from Jack Eichel, the rebound came to Mark Stone at the goal line, and Stone sent a pass to Olofsson, who fired a shot into the top of the net to make it 2-1.

Gatcomb then scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period, and Olofsson’s power-play marker helped the Golden Knights secure the win after they had five power plays in the game.

The Canucks had 19 shots in the matchup, after putting up 17 goals over their first three games of the season, and the Golden Knights entered the game having won eight straight against Vancouver dating to Dec. 19, 2024.
