Canada warns against travel to Riyadh airport after Houthi strikes; embassy says it remains open

Canada has advised against non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia and against travel to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh after deadly Houthi attacks, while saying the embassy remains open for consular help.

The Story

Canada’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia says the Canadian embassy in Riyadh remains open for Canadians who need consular assistance after deadly Houthi strikes against the city’s international airport.

Ambassador Jean-Philippe Linteau said in a video posted on Sunday that anyone in Riyadh who encounters military debris should walk away and contact authorities, rather than posting about it on social media.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting Houthi rebels in Yemen said another projectile hit a passenger terminal at the Riyadh airport on Sunday. The Sunday incident comes a day after a missile attack on the same terminal killed 12 people and injured hundreds.

Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the violence late Saturday night, calling the Houthis’ attacks on civilian infrastructure “abhorrent” and unjustified, and he expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the attack.

Canada has issued a travel advisory urging people to avoid all non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia and to avoid all travel to the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
