The Story
Brandon Montour scored with 32.7 seconds left as the Seattle Kraken recovered after blowing a two-goal lead in the third period to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 at Climate Pledge Arena on Wednesday.
Montour’s winner came off an offensive-zone faceoff when he took a pass from Jordan Eberle at the top of the right circle, wound up and fired a slap shot that squeezed through Sergei Bobrovsky’s pads.
The Kraken received goals from Chandler Stephenson, Berkly Catton, Josh Mahura and Ryker Evans, while Philipp Grubauer made 18 saves for Seattle.
Toronto was led by Gavin McKenna, who recorded his first two-goal game in the NHL and finished with two goals and an assist. Auston Matthews added a goal and two assists, and Jack Roslovic also scored for the Maple Leafs. Bobrovsky stopped 12 shots.
Catton opened the scoring 1:59 into the first period, deking around Toronto defender Oliver Ekman-Larsson in the slot before chipping a backhander past Bobrovsky’s glove; the shot hit the crossbar and bounced off Bobrovsky’s pads and in.
McKenna tied the game 1-1 at 19:14 of the first on a power play, snapping in a shot off the far post after Matthews passed from the bottom of the right circle to McKenna at the right dot.
Mahura put Seattle back ahead 2-1 just 16 seconds into the second period, finishing a 2-on-1 rush with Ben Meyers by one-timing a shot into an open net from the left circle.
McKenna drew Toronto level again at 1:46 of the second, scoring another power-play goal to make it 2-2 after he one-timed Matthews’ no-look pass from the slot to the right circle past Grubauer’s left skate.
Stephenson made it 3-2 at 3:33 of the second on a power-play goal after his pass from the top of the right circle intended for Matty Beniers bounced off Toronto defenceman Troy Stecher’s skate and went past Bobrovsky.
Evans pushed the Kraken’s lead to 4-2 at 10:58 of the second, racing in after receiving a pass from Mackie Samoskevich at the blue line and snapping the puck off the far post and in from the left dot.
Roslovic cut the deficit to 4-3 at 8:02 of the third period, and Matthews tied the game 4-4 with 1:30 left (18:30), scoring with an assist to Darren Raddysh and a second assist to Gavin McKenna.
After Toronto pulled their goalie for the late push, Montour struck for Seattle’s winning goal with 32.7 seconds remaining.
