Renato Moicano backs Alexander Volkanovski vs. Justin Gaethje after UFC 333

Renato Moicano said he would rather watch Alexander Volkanovski move back up to fight Justin Gaethje for a title shot.

The Story

After stopping the previously undefeated Movsar Evloev in the main event of UFC 333, Alexander Volkanovski said he is considering a return to the lightweight division to challenge Justin Gaethje.

Volkanovski indicated he would vacate his featherweight title rather than keep the division tied up if he pursues the matchup.

Moicano, who is returning to action in the main event of UFC Fight Night 292 against Tom Nolan, said he supports the idea of Volkanovski moving up.

Moicano acknowledged the potential disruption two divisions could face, noting that Arman Tsarukyan is the clear No. 1 lightweight contender waiting for a title shot.

Still, Moicano said the fight against Gaethje makes sense, telling MMA Junkie: “I think (it would be bad for the division), but you know what? I would rather to watch Volk against Justin Gaethje. I think that fight makes sense.”

Moicano added, “Give this man a title shot,” while saying, “It’s not good for the division, but it’s good for the fans.”

Volkanovski has previously moved up to fight for the lightweight title twice while holding the featherweight belt, losing to Islam Makhachev by unanimous decision and then by first-round stoppage.

Moicano said he would prefer the matchup because of the matchup potential, referencing Volkanovski’s past run against Makhachev and noting he has also faced opponents including Ilia Topuria, Diego Lopes and Evloev.
