Poll finds 73% of Canadians back PM Carney’s push for closer ties with the EU

A Canada Pulse Insights poll released Oct. 28, 2026 found 73% of Canadians believe Prime Minister Mark Carney is on the right track seeking closer ties with the European Union.

The Story

A new Canada Pulse Insights poll says 73% of Canadians believe Prime Minister Mark Carney is on the right track in seeking a closer economic and security alliance with the European Union, while 27% say it is the wrong track and will not be enough to offset the loss of trade with the United States.

Support for Carney’s approach was reported nationwide, ranging from 62% in Alberta to 81% in British Columbia, with 79% in Atlantic Canada, 75% in Québec, 72% in Ontario, and 64% in Saskatchewan/Manitoba.

The poll also found that support rises with age and education, and is lower among Canadians in households earning under $50,000.

Among political groups, the poll reported that current Conservative supporters are the only group in which a majority take a wrong-direction position, with 58% saying wrong direction and 42% saying right track.

Carney is scheduled to host European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa at the Canada-EU Summit in Montreal on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30.

The survey questioned 1,531 Canadian adults (18+) as part of a Canada Pulse Insights national omnibus survey, fielded from Oct. 1 to Oct. 8, 2026, using an online panel platform. The margin of error for a comparable probability-based random sample of the same size is reported as ±2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
