Vancouver School Board support staff vote 96.9% in favour of strike ‘if necessary’

The union representing Vancouver School Board support staff says members voted 96.9 per cent in favour of a strike “if necessary.”

The Story

The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 963 says its members who work for the Vancouver School Board voted 96.9 per cent in favour of a strike “if necessary.”

The union said negotiations with VSB management have stalled and that a strike may be necessary to negotiate a new collective agreement.

IUOE Local 963 said the vote took place over two days this weekend, and members could serve 72-hour strike notice at any time.

In a statement, union manager Tim De Vivo said the union’s members “have rarely gone on strike at Vancouver schools,” and added that while they are committed to keeping students warm, safe, dry, and fed, they view VSB management’s demands as “unfair and unnecessary,” describing the vote as showing strong anger among members.

The union said it represents about 900 VSB employees working in roles including building engineers, custodians, food service workers, supervision aides, and trade-qualified maintenance engineers.
