Memorial grows after two Tsawwassen elders killed in truck crash at Tsawwassen Mills Mall

A memorial is growing for two Tsawwassen First Nations elders killed Wednesday during a Truth and Reconciliation walk at Tsawwassen Mills Mall.

The Story

A memorial is growing for two yet-to-be-identified Tsawwassen First Nations elders who were killed Wednesday during a Truth and Reconciliation walk at Tsawwassen Mills Mall, Delta.

Delta Police Department (DPD) said it is continuing to investigate what caused a truck to strike four pedestrians shortly after 10:25 a.m.

Police said the investigation so far shows the driver suffered a medical emergency, causing the truck to crash into the pedestrians.

DPD said the driver received medical care on scene and was taken to hospital, where they were later released.

Police said the driver was interviewed and that no charges have been sworn.

DPD also said there is no information to suggest the crash was intentional and that investigators are continuing to probe the medical emergency the driver experienced.

Investigators said the collision was not related to the walk that was taking place in another area of the Tsawwassen Mills Mall property.

DPD said there was a scheduled House Post unveiling at the area where the crash occurred.

In comments provided Thursday, Staff Sgt. Mike Whiteley said investigators are working to determine what occurred. “Our investigators are working diligently to determine exactly what occurred and to conduct a thorough investigation into all of the circumstances surrounding this collision,” Whiteley said.

DPD said it is still seeking information, including from anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam or cellphone footage, and asked people to contact the DPD at 604-946-4444 and reference file 26-18401.

Police said they are not releasing the names of the deceased while they work with the BC Coroners Service and support the families affected.
