Cavan Sullivan scored twice and Philadelphia Union defeated Toronto FC 4-1 on Saturday to secure an automatic berth in the Major League Soccer Cup playoffs.
The Story
Philadelphia Union clinched an automatic berth into a best-of-three series in the Major League Soccer Cup playoffs with a 4-1 win over Toronto FC on Saturday in Chester, Pa.
Cavan Sullivan opened the scoring in the 28th minute after Quinn Sullivan’s cross in front of goal was settled by Indiana Vassilev, pulling Toronto goalkeeper William Yarbrough out of his area to set up a close-range finish into an empty net.
Quinn Sullivan then doubled Philadelphia’s lead in the 41st, converting a penalty kick for a 2-0 advantage.
Toronto pulled one back in first-half stoppage time when Josh Sargent headed in a corner kick delivered by Djordje Mihailovic.
Cavan Sullivan restored the three-goal cushion in the 58th minute, and Quinn Sullivan later provided his scoring touch on a one-touch finish after a breakaway sparked by Bruno Damiani’s flick header.
Damiani capped the match in the 73rd with a penalty kick as Philadelphia sealed the 4-1 result.
Philadelphia finished sixth in the Eastern Conference with 50 points, following its stretch under interim head coach Ryan Richter—earning 43 points out of a possible 57 and outscoring opponents 48-22 since the World Cup break.
The brother duo became the third pair in MLS history to each score for the same club in the same match, joining Gonzalo and Federico Higuaín and Diego and Yimmi Chara.
Toronto entered the match seeking its first road victory over the Union since March 2019, while Philadelphia captain Alejandro Bedoya appeared as a late substitute in what was his final MLS regular-season appearance.
