Five things to watch in the Canadian business world this coming week

In the coming week, major developments include Quebec’s election, new trade data from Statistics Canada, an airline conference in Ottawa, Aritzia’s quarterly results, and Canada’s September jobs report.

The Story

Quebec election: It is election day in Quebec on Monday, with polls suggesting the Parti Québécois is in the lead and leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has asked voters to give the separatist party a majority in the province’s legislature.

If the PQ wins, Plamondon has promised to hold a referendum on independence, but not until after U.S. President Donald Trump is out of office.

Trade figures: Statistics Canada is scheduled to release its international merchandise trade numbers for August on Tuesday, following new U.S. tariffs that came into force at the end of the month after trade talks broke down without a deal.

Canada reported a surplus of $769 million in July, while total exports fell 2.3 per cent for the month.

Aviation Day conference: Aviation industry leaders are gathering in Ottawa on Thursday for the Aviation Day conference, where airline CEOs, airport executives and government officials are expected to discuss challenges and opportunities for the sector, including the impact of soaring jet fuel prices and airports preparing for private investment.

Aritzia results: Aritzia Inc. will release its second-quarter results after the close of markets on Thursday, after reporting a first-quarter profit of $117.3 million, up from $42.4 million in the same period a year earlier, with strong demand for spring and summer offerings and benefits from its U.S. expansion.

Jobs report: Statistics Canada is set to release its September jobs report on Friday, when it will publish its labour force survey for the month.

The Canadian economy lost 42,000 jobs in August, and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.4 per cent.
