Seahawks hold Chiefs to 20-3 as Patrick Mahomes struggles in Sunday night win

Seattle beat Kansas City 20-3 on Sunday night, snapping a two-game losing streak and moving to 4-3.

The Story

The Seattle Seahawks beat the Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 on Sunday night at Lumen Field, the defending Super Bowl champions’ first look like the dominant team from last season’s playoff run.

The win brought Seattle to 4-3 on the year, two games behind the San Francisco 49ers (6-1) in the NFC West, with both the 49ers and the Chiefs (5-1) losing as the season’s unbeaten teams fell. Seattle also ended a two-game losing streak with the victory.

Defensively, Seattle’s performance limited Kansas City’s offense to 213 total yards, well below the 414 the Chiefs were averaging entering the game. The Seahawks also held the Chiefs out of the red zone and led the NFL in total defense (237.3 total yards allowed), pass defense (141.3), yards per play allowed (4.0) and takeaways (11).

Patrick Mahomes finished 19-of-33 for 165 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He also fumbled and Kansas City recovered it in the second half.

On the ground, Seattle limited Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, who returned to Lumen Field as the league’s rushing leader with 665 yards through six weeks. Walker was held to 36 yards on 14 carries as Seattle swarmed to the football and prevented him from making outside cuts, while his replacement, Emanuel Wilson, rushed for 100 yards.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba was a key factor in Seattle’s passing game. Entering Sunday, he led the league with 49 receptions, 717 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns, and he finished with nine catches for 150 yards and a touchdown.
