Eby promises to temporarily suspend B.C. gas tax and seek pump price cap if re-elected

B.C. NDP Leader David Eby says an NDP government would ask the B.C. Utilities Commission to set a weekly maximum fuel price and temporarily suspend the provincial motor fuel tax by 10 cents per litre.

The Story

British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby says, if re-elected on Oct. 24, his government would temporarily suspend the provincial motor fuel tax by 10 cents per litre for gas and diesel.

Eby also says the government would ask the B.C. Utilities Commission to set a maximum price that fuel stations can charge, with the cap updated weekly as a benchmark price for crude oil fluctuates.

He said his plan includes what he called a “price guard” to crack down on gouging at the pump.

Eby made the announcement while campaigning in Surrey.

In a statement, he said his approach would protect working families from price gouging during what he described as an uncertain time, and that the measures would save a typical two-car family up to $100 a month.

The report was originally published Oct. 1, 2026.
