The Story

A Calgary puppeteer collective is among the four finalists for Canada’s $100,000 Siminovitch Prize, which honours a mid-career theatre artist or ensemble.

The prize’s finalists were announced Thursday, and the winner will be announced on Nov. 30.

One of the finalists is Old Trout Puppet Workshop, based in Calgary and described as known for intricately carved wooden puppets. The group was also in the running for the prize in 2024.

The finalists list also includes Sherry J. Yoon and Jay Dodge, identified as the artistic directors of Vancouver’s Boca del Lupo, a company that produces performances in unexpected places including public parks and shipping containers.

Montreal director and set designer Catherine Bourgeois is another finalist; she is described as co-founder of the theatre company Joe Jack et John.

The fourth finalist is Olivier Kemeid, described as a Montreal playwright, novelist, director and actor who has been a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Awards four times.

The Siminovitch Prize is worth $100,000, and the winner will be invited to choose a protege who will receive $25,000.
