2 stolen Renoir paintings found in France; mayor says six people were arrested

Two Renoir paintings reported stolen from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, have been recovered and six people have been arrested, the mayor said.

The Story

Two Renoir paintings stolen from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, in southern France, have been found and six people have been arrested, the mayor of the town, Bryan Masson, said in a statement issued Friday.

Masson praised investigators for tracking down the paintings and suspects, but his statement did not provide details on how the recovery was made. The regional prosecutor’s office and police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The paintings recovered were “Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano” and “Young Woman at the Well.” The theft began when thieves cut through a fence, climbed through a window and initially stole four valuable Renoir works during a heist on Sept. 8, 2026.

Authorities said the thieves abandoned two of the artworks as they fled, and investigators then launched a national search for the perpetrators.

The regional prosecutor’s office said the operation took less than three minutes and targeted the most valuable works in the Renoir Museum in the town of Cagnes-sur-Mer.
