Kochetkov stops 26 as Hurricanes rout Jets 7-0, Walker nets two

Pyotr Kochetkov made 26 saves in a shutout as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Winnipeg Jets 7-0 on Sunday.

The Story

Carolina opened a decisive lead early, then coasted as Pyotr Kochetkov turned aside 26 Winnipeg shots to record his second shutout of the season.

Sean Walker scored twice for the Hurricanes, including a short-handed goal that opened the scoring 5:16 into the game. Sebastian Aho also scored on a power play during Carolina’s four-goal burst in the first 10 minutes of the second period.

Logan Stankoven added to the rout by scoring at 9:09 of the second period to extend the lead to 5-0, at a time when Winnipeg had just five total shots on goal.

A total of five other Carolina players found the net: Sebastian Aho, Juuso Valimaki, Logan Stankoven, Mark Jankowski and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Stankoven, Seth Jarvis, Nikolaj Ehlers and Shayne Gostisbehere each recorded two assists.

Winnipeg’s losing streak reached nine straight games, going 0-7-2 during that span. Stuart Skinner made 12 saves before being pulled after allowing the fifth goal, with Clay Stevenson stopping 13 shots in relief.

Carolina’s win followed it winning four straight games, while Kochetkov’s start improved his shutout run to 10 straight victories to begin the season, the third such 10-0 start by a goalie in NHL history. The Hurricanes next play at Nashville on Tuesday night, while the Jets visit Montreal Tuesday to finish a four-game road trip.
