Junior Caminero’s ninth-inning homer gives Rays a 2-1 escape over Athletics

For eight innings, this game kept shrinking until every detail mattered. A passed ball created Tampa Bay’s first run, a wild pitch gave Oakland its answer, and then Junior Caminero settled a taut 2-1 Rays win with a solo shot in the ninth.

Two free runs, then the one that counted

This was the kind of low-scoring game that keeps changing its meaning. Early on, it looked as if the Rays might have enough with a single break, because their first run arrived in the second inning without a hit driving it in. Chandler Simpson scored on a passed ball by Jonah Heim, and in a night with only eight non-homer singles and one double between the clubs, that gift sat heavily on the scoreboard. The Athletics did not answer with a rally of their own; they simply waited for Tampa Bay to return the favor.

That came in the sixth. Henry Bolte scored on a Ty Johnson wild pitch, with Jeff McNeil moving to second, and the game was reset at 1-1. That tie told the story of the evening: neither lineup did much sustained damage, both pitching staffs kept the strike zone under pressure, and the margin for a clean mistake was almost nonexistent. When Caminero finally homered to right in the ninth, the game shifted from nuisance baseball to finality in one swing.

Perkins and Jax made offense feel expensive

Oakland will leave frustrated, but Jack Perkins gave the Athletics a performance sturdy enough to deserve better support. He worked 6.2 innings, allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked one. Just as important, the only run charged while he was in the game was unearned, which matters in a contest where every baserunner felt borrowed. Luis Medina and Hogan Harris then covered 1.1 scoreless innings, so the Athletics carried a tie into the ninth with their pitching doing nearly everything required.

Tampa Bay answered that effort with a staff line even slimmer: nine innings, four hits, no walks and 12 strikeouts. Griffin Jax set the tone over five scoreless innings, giving up only two hits while striking out seven. The sixth got messy when Johnson allowed the tying run on the wild pitch, but the Rays recovered quickly. Cam Booser added 1.1 scoreless innings, Kevin Kelly struck out three in his one inning, and Bryan Baker kept the tie intact long enough for the offense to end it. The cleanest number in Tampa Bay’s line may have been the zero in the walk column allowed.

Simpson kept showing up; Oakland never found a second wave

If Tampa Bay’s offense felt incomplete, Simpson was the exception. He went 3-for-3 and scored the Rays’ first run, accounting for half the club’s hits by himself. Caminero’s box line was shorter but louder: 1-for-4, one run, one RBI, one home run, game over. Beyond that, the Rays had just one hit apiece from Jonathan Aranda and Jorge Mateo, plus one walk from Liam Hicks. That is enough to win a 2-1 game, but only barely, and the 10 runners left on base tell the less flattering side of Tampa Bay’s night. The Rays created traffic more often than Oakland did, yet they still spent most of the evening one timely play short.

The Athletics had even less room to operate. They managed four hits, drew no walks and struck out 12 times, leaving them with a .129 on-base percentage for the game. Bolte, McNeil, Shea Langeliers and Alika Williams supplied the four hits, and Bolte scored the lone run, but there was no follow-up wave behind them. Oakland did not hit a home run, had only one extra-base hit, and never found a way to widen the field of pressure on Tampa Bay’s staff. In a one-run game, that absence becomes the whole problem.

Our take: the Rays earned the finish, but both offenses left work undone

Our take: Tampa Bay deserved credit for surviving the messy middle and still producing the game’s only authoritative swing. In a matchup where the first two runs came home on a passed ball and a wild pitch, Caminero’s homer felt like the one truly settled outcome. It also rescued a Rays offense that struck out 10 times and stranded 10 runners. The victory counts the same, but it reads less like offensive command than persistence plus one decisive bat.

Our take on the Athletics is harsher only because their pitching gave them a genuine chance. Perkins’ 6.2 innings and the bullpen work from Medina and Harris should have been enough to keep Oakland level into the late innings, and for a while it was. But four hits and no walks is too narrow a path, especially against a staff that threw 80 strikes in 117 pitches. If there is a lesson here, it is not abstract: Oakland needed one more baserunner; Tampa Bay needed one more hit earlier. The Rays got theirs last, and that was the whole difference.
