Five doubles and four early runs carry Rays past Athletics at Tropicana Field

The Tampa Bay Rays scored all four of their runs in the first two innings Wednesday, then spent the rest of the night proving that an early burst can still decide a tight game. Their 4-3 win over the Athletics was built on doubles, protected by clean defense and just enough relief work, and tested by an Oakland lineup that never quite stopped threatening.

The first two innings wrote the score

There was nothing subtle about the way Tampa Bay seized control. In the first inning, Junior Caminero came home on Jonny DeLuca’s double to left, and DeLuca himself scored when Chandler Simpson doubled to right. That quick 2-0 lead set the tone for an offense that did not leave the yard once all night but kept driving balls into the gaps. The Rays finished with five doubles among their nine hits, and those extra bases were the cleanest explanation for why they led the game almost immediately.

They kept pressing in the second. Jorge Mateo scored on Nick Fortes’ double to left, then Ryan Vilade followed with a single that brought Fortes home for a 4-0 advantage. It was the kind of inning-by-inning pressure that can make a pitching line look harsher in a hurry. Athletics starter Brady Basso lasted 2.2 innings, allowed seven hits and four earned runs, and did not record a strikeout. Oakland’s staff eventually settled the game down, but by then the Rays had already banked the margin they needed.

What stands out in that opening stretch is how direct Tampa Bay had to be. The Rays did not draw a walk. They had to earn every baserunner with contact, and in those first two innings they did it repeatedly enough to matter. They also stole two bases, another sign that their offense kept moving even without a home run. It was a sharp contrast in style with an Athletics club that would later lean on the long ball to climb back in.

Oakland hit back, but not all the way

The Athletics answered in the third with the quickest route back into a game: Tommy White homered to left, and Henry Bolte followed later in the inning with a 414-foot shot to center. Just like that, a 4-0 cushion had been cut in half. White finished 3-for-4 and was Oakland’s most productive bat of the night, while Bolte’s homer gave the Athletics their second run on only their second extra-base hit to that point.

That rally also changed the reading of Nick Martinez’s outing for Tampa Bay. His final line — five innings, five hits, two runs, no walks and three strikeouts — was not overpowering, but it was functional in exactly the way the Rays required. He absorbed the two solo homers and still got Tampa Bay through five innings with the lead intact. In a one-run game by the end, those remaining outs mattered every bit as much as the early scoring.

Oakland drew one run closer in the sixth when Jeff McNeil scored on Shea Langeliers’ single to center. McNeil went 2-for-3, and that sequence briefly threatened to turn the night all the way around. Instead, Kevin Kelly limited the damage across two innings, striking out four while allowing that lone run. Then Cam Booser and Cole Sulser handled the final two innings without surrendering a hit, with Sulser collecting the save. The Rays’ defense helped too: no errors, and two double plays behind the pitching staff.

Our take: this game belonged to sequencing

For a one-run result, this was not really a mystery. Both teams finished with zero walks, which stripped the game down to a simple contest of who turned contact into the right kind of innings. Tampa Bay had nine hits and five doubles but somehow still left 15 runners on base. Oakland had eight hits, hit two home runs, and left 12 on. The difference was not volume so much as arrangement. The Rays stacked their best swings early enough to build a 4-0 lead, while the Athletics spread their damage out over the middle innings and never found the tying run.

If Tampa Bay wants a note of caution inside a win, it is here: the offense went scoreless for seven straight innings despite nine hits on the night. Leaving 15 aboard is too much to ignore, especially in a game that tightened to 4-3. The encouraging part is that the method worked at the start — DeLuca, Simpson, Fortes and Vilade all drove in runs without needing a homer. Repeating more of that conversion through the middle innings would make games like this less delicate.

For the Athletics, the lesson feels equally clear. They got enough production to make the Rays sweat: White homered and had three hits, Bolte hit one out, McNeil reached twice, and Langeliers drove in a run. But the early hole was costly, and the absence of a walk left little margin once those first two innings were gone. Oakland can reasonably look at this one and conclude that steadier opening-inning pitching and a little more traffic ahead of the power would have changed the conversation. As it stands, Tampa Bay earned the result by doing its most important work first and its cleanest work last.
