Patience and a six-run fourth send Rays past Athletics 10-1 at Tropicana Field

The Tampa Bay Rays did not bludgeon the Athletics with a pile of hits Thursday. They did something more methodical and, for the Athletics, more punishing: they kept putting men on base until one crooked inning reshaped the whole night.

MLB / FINAL
Athletics1 — 10Tampa Bay Rays
AthleticsTampa Bay Rays

The inning where patience turned into damage

For three innings, this looked manageable for the Athletics. Then the fourth arrived, and Tampa Bay built a six-run frame without needing a homer. Chandler Simpson started the scoring with a single to center that brought home Junior Caminero and Liam Hicks. Richie Palacios followed with the game’s most damaging swing, a double to right that scored Jonny DeLuca, brought home Ryan Vilade on a fielding error by catcher Jonah Heim, and also sent Simpson across. Taylor Walls then added a bunt single that plated Palacios. In one inning, a 0-0 game became 6-0.

That burst was the clearest difference in the matchup: the Rays kept turning access to first base into pressure. They finished with seven hits, but also nine walks, one hit batter and three stolen bases, forcing the Athletics to defend far more traffic than their hit total alone would suggest. Jeffrey Springs lasted 3 1/3 innings and was charged with six runs on five hits and two walks, and the Athletics as a staff needed 172 pitches to record 24 outs. Against that many extra baserunners, one bad inning did not need much help to become a big one.

The Athletics briefly found a clean answer in the sixth, when Lawrence Butler drove a 437-foot homer to right to get them on the board. But even that moment did not shift the game’s direction for long. In the bottom half, Tampa Bay answered without a hit that left the yard and without much delay. Walls drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Simpson, then Jonathan Aranda drew another walk to bring home Cedric Mullins. That immediate reply restored the six-run cushion and made Butler’s shot feel more like a footnote than a pivot.

Rasmussen set the tone, and the bullpen kept it simple

While the Rays’ fourth inning decided the scoreboard, Drew Rasmussen shaped the game just as firmly on the other side. He worked five scoreless innings, allowed four hits and two walks, and kept the Athletics from stringing anything together early. Tampa Bay’s pitching line for the night was tidy almost everywhere that matters: nine innings, five hits, one run, three walks and eight strikeouts. The Athletics did steal three bases, but they rarely converted that speed into a scoring threat.

The bullpen’s work mattered because it prevented any late uncertainty. Casey Legumina surrendered Butler’s solo homer in the sixth, but that was the only damage the Rays allowed all night. After that, Brody Hopkins, Steven Matz and Alexander Cook combined for the final three innings without allowing a hit, striking out five and walking one. Tampa Bay’s defense also backed the pitchers with three double plays, an efficient answer to the few moments when the Athletics managed to put a man aboard.

That left Butler as almost the entire Athletics offense by himself. He went 2-for-4 and supplied their only run with the homer, while Henry Bolte, Zack Gelof and Denzel Clarke added one hit each. Everyone else in the lineup was held hitless. The larger problem was not just the five-hit total; it was the lack of follow-through around it. The Athletics drew three walks and stole three bases, yet still finished with one run and left 12 men on base. A team can survive a light-hitting night once in a while, but not when the missed chances pile up that high.

Our take: this was a lesson in base traffic, not brute force

The striking part of this 10-1 result is that Tampa Bay scored 10 times with only seven hits and no home runs. That usually means a game was won in the quieter margins, and that is exactly what happened here. The Rays saw 172 pitches in 42 plate appearances, reached often enough to post a .405 on-base percentage for the game, and kept asking the Athletics to record one more clean out. The Athletics never consistently did. This was not an offensive avalanche built on extra-base thunder; it was a long accumulation of walks, advancement and well-timed contact.

For the Rays, the obvious encouragement is that they created a lopsided score without needing their biggest bats to leave the yard. Simpson drove in two and scored twice, Hicks had two hits and two RBIs, Palacios produced the three-run double that broke the game open, and Walls drove in two more. If there is a small note of caution inside a comfortable win, it is that Tampa Bay still struck out 10 times and allowed the Athletics to go 3-for-3 on stolen-base attempts while also committing an error. In a tighter game, those details would matter more than they did here.

For the Athletics, the corrective priorities are clearer. First, the run prevention has to start with fewer free passes and cleaner innings: nine walks, one hit batter and two errors are too many gifts to hand a club that is willing to wait. The fourth inning proved how fast those gifts can multiply. Second, the lineup needs more than isolated activity. The Athletics had five hits, batted .156 as a team and managed only one extra-base hit, Butler’s homer. The result felt less like a simple talent gap than a sharp reminder that baseball games can get away from you when one side keeps creating baserunners and the other side keeps failing to cash in its smaller openings.
